Purpose: Visualize Alpha particles.
Parts:
- Alpha particle chamber(thermo electric) – on the back table in the teaching lab room TPL 215.
- Isopropyl (rubbing) Alcohol – in the cupboard with the radioactive hazards sign in the teaching lab room TPL 215.
Setup:
There are two versions of the same setups setting up procedure is same for both except one can be projected to the big screen. Take the setup and plug it to the wall outlet.
Take the pyrex chamber out carefully and pour some alcohol into it and spread it over the black rim inside the container so that it will work as a reservoir for some time.
There is a needle attached to a cork, and the needle head is plated with radioactive material. Place the needle on the base as shown in the picture below. Try to point the needle head to the center of the circular base. Place the pyrex chamber upside down on the base as it was.
There are three switches on the little black boxes in each setup. Switch them on and watch the tracks of alpha particles inside the chamber.
